The Giant of Provence

Mont Ventoux takes its name from the Provençal Occitan "Mont Ventor" which means "which can be seen from afar". It is also linked to the word "windy" since when the mistral wind blows, the gusts of wind can reach speeds of 300 km/h on its crest, hence the name "col des Tempêtes". Dominating Provence, Mont Ventoux extends over 25 kilometres from west to east and 8 kilometres from north to south. It is first covered by a forest of larches, cedars and firs and then by flat stones called lauzes, making it appear to be covered in snow all year round, whereas it is only covered from December to March.

A sportsman's paradise

On foot, by bike, on horseback, on skis or snowshoes, Mont Ventoux represents a real challenge for many sportsmen. In winter, the Mont Serein resort, located on the north face of Mont Ventoux, is one of the oldest ski resorts in France, where you can enjoy downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, sledging, snowboarding and snowshoeing in a friendly atmosphere. The Ventoux area has more than 260 km of short hiking trails and 117 km of long hiking trails, during which you can enjoy an exceptional wealth of vegetation (more than a thousand species) and come across many animals. Climbing enthusiasts can practice their passion in the vicinity of the Ventoux, in the Dentelles de Montmirail, in Venasque, Malaucène and Bedoin. After a sportive day full of discoveries, you will return to your comfortable hotel in Mont Ventoux, the Hostellerie du Val de Sault.
